Selena
She broke through the barriers of the music business in her roles as a performer, singer and designer. She was the first Mexican American singer who was both traditional and modern. She united both worlds and brought Tejano music into mainstream culture. As is often the case with a bright and friendly star is lost in a hurry and unexpectedly, it has thrown her profile into a quagmire. People mourned the entire extent of her potential, which was untapped. As a result fans have been inspired over through the years to dig and work harder to ensure her successes will not be forgotten. Selena is the Tejano artist who was tragically shot to death by a gunshot accident caused the Latino response that could be likened to the reaction to Elvis Presley's and John Lennon's deaths. An enormously popular singer in Latino communities throughout North America her music crossed lines of cultural difference to affect the lives of children as well as old. Selena was an asexual, flamboyant performer on stage that was frequently referred to by her as the Latina Madonna. Off-stage Selena was an outstanding role model, as she participated actively in antidrug and AIDS campaigning.
